Well, if you don’t think that over 60 books written over a time period of thousands of years all bearing the same basic message, confirmed by archaeology and the Dead Sea Scrolls is trustworthy, I don’t know what to tell you. There used to be a claim that the Bible could not be true because there was no evidence that the Hittites ever existed – that is, until evidence of them was discovered. They were mighty warriors, who taunted even the Egyptian empire, and it’s no surprise that King David had a Hittite to lead his army. The Dead Sea Scrolls are a group of Jewish manuscripts found in 1947 in a cave in Palestine. It contained ancient copies of parts of the Old Testament, dating back to 3 BC. I’ve seen parts of it for myself when I visited the museum that was hosting it. There’s more evidence for it than for a lot of other religions, including Islam.
However, some have made a habit of calling the Bible “God’s Word.” And they see it as this divine, perfect document. Don’t get me wrong – I believe it was under the inspiration from the Holy Spirit that these people wrote these things. I’ve heard it said that the Bible is not the Word of God, but the Words of God. That is, people were under inspiration to write certain things down. Now, I believe it is His Word – but, it’s the written Word. Jesus is the Living Word of God. The law is used as a tutor until the Teacher comes in (Gal 3:24). It points us to Christ, who Himself stated, “I am the Way and the Truth and the Life. No one comes to the Father except through Me” (John 14:6). The Bible itself, even though from God, can actually become an idol, if we are not careful! It’s kind of like what happened to Gideon, in Judges 8:24-27. After winning some key military battles, Gideon made a vest, known as an “ephod,” which God allowed and even instructed the Israelites to make earlier for the priesthood, but it eventually became an idol to him, and snared his people.
